HGTV Show 'Good Bones' Features IU McKinney Alumna Karen E. Laine, '92
05/30/2017
Karen E. Laine, ’92, and her daughter, Mina Starsiak Hawk, are entering the second season of their HGTV show titled, “Good Bones.” The program documents the work of the pair as they renovate the Fountain Square neighborhood, one home at a time.
Both women (in the photo, Starsiak Hawk is at left) are graduates of Indiana University, and a story about the television show’s second season was featured on the university’s website. The second season began May 30.
Their home renovation business, Two Chicks and a Hammer, was a side business for Laine, who opened a private practice and bought a house to use as her law office. Laine purchased the home next door to her daughter’s first property, and the pair taught themselves how to do the work needed to fix up both properties. They rehabbed about two houses per year while keeping their day jobs. Now that they have an HGTV show, they do home rehab work fulltime.
"We are rehabilitating a neighborhood one house at a time,” Laine said in the story. “We buy the worst house on a block that no one else is interested in, and we make it the best house on the block. If we can do that to a couple of houses on a block, we've really made a difference."
