IU McKinney SJD Candidate Publishes on Encroachment upon South China Sea
05/30/2017
Doctor of Juridical Science candidate Perfecto “Boyet” Caparas, LL.M. ‘05, published an article urging the Philippines to ask China to pay, leave and comply with the South China Sea award rendered by a United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)-created arbitral tribunal in The Hague.
In his article titled, “China should pay and go,” which was published by Rappler on May 28, 2017, Caparas urged the Philippines “to officially demand that China vacate these islands and pay economic compensation for these lost economic benefits.”
“Demanding that China leave and pay economic compensation over its unauthorized and illegal appropriation and use of the Philippines’ reefs and their surrounding areas will be an important first step in standing up to China and demanding its respect and fulfillment of its binding obligations under UNCLOS and the arbitral award.”
Caparas is Associate Director of Graduate Programs at IU McKinney.
