IU McKinney LL.M. Student Lin Zhu Attends Trade Fair in China as Part of World Trade Center Indy 'Pro Bono' Work
07/14/2017
IU McKinney Master of Laws student Lin Zhu attended a trade fair focusing on technology in Chengdu, China, in May. Zhu, who is originally from Shanghai, China, was among the law school’s international LL.M. students who conducted research into trade markets in their home countries. Their research was a boon to the newly-formed World Trade Center Indianapolis (WTC-Indy), which was launched in February. The partnership between WTC-Indy and IU McKinney also provides pro bono opportunities for LL.M. students.
Zhu was chosen to attend the trade fair thanks to her extensive research work for WTC-Indy, and her fluency in both Chinese and English. While at the trade fair, Zhu served as a cultural, educational, and business liaison. She also gave a presentation about IU McKinney to conference attendees.
“I truly believe that my research fellowship with the World Trade Center Indianapolis prepared me well for the wonderful opportunity to attend the trade fair and to network with colleagues in China,” Zhu said. “I am grateful for the experience I have had thus far with the Pro Bono Program in the Office of Professional Development. My network of contacts has greatly expanded and I have met business leaders whom I never would have had the opportunity to know.”
Trade fair participants included business people from the United States and China. While in China, Zhu also met with staff from the World Trade Center Shanghai, and met many contacts interested in engaging the United States and China in trade ventures. Other attendees included Doris Anne Sadler, president of WTC-Indy, Brian Wikle of 4medica, and Chris Conoley of Medline Industries.
The partnership came about after WTC Indy founder and chairman Greg Zoeller, an adjunct law professor at IU McKinney, brought the idea to Dean Andrew R. Klein, Professor Frank Emmert and Professor Tom Wilson. Implemented as part of the law school’s Pro Bono program, the partnership provides an opportunity for students to gain practical experience in international trade.
