IU McKinney Joins Effort to Provide Wills and Health Care Documents to University Community
08/16/2017
The Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law is joining in an effort on the part of the IU Office of the Vice President and General Counsel to provide wills and advanced directive services to university employees, students and their parents. These services will be provided at no charge to those who meet certain criteria.
“We are delighted to partner with the McKinney School of Law to offer this benefit, which will help clarify intentions and ease the burden on families in times of stress,” said IU Vice President and General Counsel Jacqueline Simmons.
The program first launched in 2016 in Bloomington and due to its success, was expanded to include IU McKinney. The wills and advanced directives document preparation services are available to employees, students and their parents at any IU-managed regional campus, who have an annual income of $50,000 or less. The documents, a simple will and health care power of attorney, will be drafted by a trained second- or third-year IU McKinney student and reviewed by one of the staff attorneys in the university’s legal office.
“The McKinney School of Law has a long-standing history of pro bono assistance and contributed over 20,000 hours of service in 2017,” said IU McKinney Dean Andrew R. Klein. “We are incredibly pleased to be a part of this program.”
“Each year, our graduating students are acknowledged for their outstanding service to the community,” said Chasity Thompson, ’02, Assistant Dean for the Office of Professional Development at IU McKinney. “Many students far exceed the minimum recognition amount of 50 hours. This wonderful initiative will afford them the opportunity to contribute to the university while further honing their skills.”
