Pat Shoulders Receives Excellence in Continuing Legal Education Award
08/22/2017
Pat Shoulders, ’78, has received the Excellence in Continuing Legal Education Award from the Indiana Continuing Legal Education Forum (ICLEF). He received the honor at the board’s annual dinner in July.
ICLEF seldom bestows the honor, which recognizes those who have, as the inscription on the award reads: “actively participated and worked to enhance the quality and professionalism of continuing legal education” and “for the efforts of innovative leadership and the pursuit of excellence in continuing legal education.”
Shoulders has taught for ICLEF for over 30 years, beginning his work with the organization in the 1980s, and becoming instrumental in the trial and litigation curriculums by 1990. He is particularly known for his portrayal of the fictional Dewey C. Howe in ICLEF’s production of the Trial of John Wilkes Booth during the Indiana State Bar Association’s 100th anniversary celebration. He also has served as one of the co-chairs for ICLEF’s Trial Advocacy Skills College for the past 20 years.
Shoulders, who was re-elected to a sixth term as an IU Trustee in June, holds two IU degrees: a J.D., magna cum laude, from IU McKinney, and a bachelor of arts from IU Bloomington. He chaired the IU Alumni Association in 2000 and has served on the Varsity Club and IU Foundation Board of Directors.
He is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and has played a leadership role in a number of professional organizations. He has long been deeply involved in the Evansville community, devoting his time to organizations involved with youth and in the arts, recreation, public broadcasting, local government and education. He received the Hine Medal from IUPUI in 2005, a Sagamore of the Wabash in 1996, and the Herman Wells Leadership Award from Sigma Nu Fraternity in 2005.
