IU McKinney Alumna Heads Missouri Department of Natural Resources
09/28/2017
Carol Comer,’96, is director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, appointed by Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens in January.
“When I was Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, we worked closely with our regulated public. I brought that model with me when I came to Missouri,” Comer said. “Just like Indiana, Missouri needs both a healthy environment and a healthy economy to thrive. We partner with our regulated public to better understand their processes and their needs, and it is our goal to communicate face-to-face with the public we serve. Working together, we often find more efficient and cost effective ways of meeting our environmental goals.”
Comer previously served as Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) under then-Governor Mike Pence, ‘86.
Prior to her role as Chief of Staff, Comer served as IDEM General Counsel, where she oversaw approximately 30 attorneys and support staff. Previously, she served as a Senior Administrative Law Judge for the Indiana Board of Tax Review and as an Administrative Law Judge with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. Comer began her environmental law career at Plews Shadley Racher & Braun in Indianapolis, and she also has practiced law at Lewis Roca Rothgerber in Phoenix.
Comer received her undergraduate degree from Indiana University Kelley School of Business. She was a joint-degree student at IU McKinney, receiving a J.D. and a Master of Public Affairs degree from the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Comer was the law school’s first Environmental Law Fellow.
