10/31/2017
Master of Laws students at IU McKinney took part in “Shadow an Attorney” day on October 30. Students had the opportunity to partake in a networking lunch, met with a judge, and representatives from the Indiana Department of Revenue.
Students took part in a networking lunch at the Indiana Historical Society, where they were met by Assistant General Counsel Lena Snethen, and Azalea De Ford, LL.M. ’12, Director of Strategic Planning and Programming. From there, the students went to the Indiana Supreme Court’s Courtroom, where they received an Indiana Tax Court Update directly from Indiana Tax Court Judge Martha B. Wentworth. (The photo at left of the students and Judge Wentworth was taken immediately outside the Courtroom.)
"I am enthusiastic anytime I can talk to students about the importance of a fair tax system to a vibrant economy," Judge Wentworth said. "In particular, I was honored to inform the law school’s LL.M. students, who are mostly from other countries, about the many virtues of Indiana’s much-envied independent judicial Tax Court. I hope we do this every year!”
Following the update, the students went to the Indiana Department of Revenue, where they met with Commissioner Adam Krupp, ’04, and members of his leadership team at the department. Students then heard from the department’s general counsel, Patrick Price.
“As a proud McKinney alum, I was honored to have the opportunity to open the Indiana Department of Revenue’s doors to such a great group of students to talk about a day in the life of a DOR employee," Krupp said. "I look forward to continuing to build this partnership between our agency and the law school, through internships and externships, as well as other potential strategic planning endeavors."
“It was a pleasure to meet with the LL.M. students from around the world and share with them a little of the experiences here at the Indiana Department of Revenue," Price said. "Increased dialogue and sharing ideas makes us all better.”
“As an LL.M. alumna and DOR employee, I was ecstatic to bridge together both organizations to allow my fellow LL.M. colleagues engaging with our amazing state leaders," De Ford said. "DOR is one of the best places to work, and to host our first 'Shadow an Attorney Day' to showcase our new culture was an exciting opportunity.”
