Veronica Schilb, a second-year law student in the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law’s day program, served an internship during Summer 2017 in the Office of Vice President Mike Pence, ’86.

The internship began after Memorial Day and concluded in early August. Veronica worked in the Counsel’s Office, where she conducted legal research, drafted memos on federal laws, and provided staff support for a presidential advisory committee. She was one of 138 White House interns for the summer and among 10 other interns serving in the Office of the Vice President (OVP). Veronica was the only intern assigned to the Counsel’s Office.
Veronica shared a bit of her experience of working in the Office of the Vice President via a blog post about the history of the Vice President’s Ceremonial Office. In the photo at right, she is pictured at left behind the Theodore Roosevelt Desk standing next to Matt Morgan, ’08, who serves as Deputy Counsel to the Vice President. Schilb also worked alongside Andrew Kossack, ’07, who is Associate Counsel to the Vice President.
“It was a fantastic opportunity to work with other talented students and recent graduates from around the country who have also become good friends,” Veronica said.
It wasn’t the first time Veronica has worked in government or with Vice President Pence. A native of Fort Wayne, Indiana, she completed her undergraduate studies at Manchester University, majoring in political science. In 2012, Veronica was selected by then-Governor Mitch Daniels’ administration to participate in the Governor’s Fellowship Program, a year-long program designed to give recent graduates experience working in state government. Following her year as a Governor’s Fellow, Veronica was hired to be the Assistant Legislative Director in the Office of Governor Mike Pence, and it’s a role Veronica still holds in Governor Eric Holcomb’s office. As part of the legislative team, Veronica provides strategic guidance to ensure the Governor’s legislative and policy goals are met.
Working with the executive and legislative branches of state government piqued an interest in law school.
“I have several friends who are current students or alumni of IU McKinney, and they encouraged me to pursue my legal education there,” Veronica said. “I loved that attending IU McKinney would allow me to get a law degree while also being able to continue my work at the Statehouse, so it was a perfect fit.”
Veronica wanted to expand her skills with an experience in federal government, so she applied for the White House Internship Program. She will further her education during Fall 2017 by taking part in IU McKinney’s Program on Law and State Government as an extern in the Indiana Governor’s Office.
Her internship and practical experience have helped to solidify Veronica’s career aspirations after she completes her legal education.
Veronica said, “My internship this summer has definitely prepared me to work in a legal setting upon graduation and confirmed that I made the right choice in deciding to go into the legal profession and choosing IU McKinney for law school.”
