Professor Schumm Discusses Indiana's Lack of Statewide Appellate Defender System for Indiana Lawyer Story
12/15/2017
Indiana's Task Force on Public Defense was created in response to the Sixth Amendment Center's criticisms of the way the state provides indigent defense services. Professor Joel Schumm, '98, is part of this task force and he discussed this work in a story on the effort that appears in the December 13 issue of Indiana Lawyer.
Professor Schumm chairs the appellate post-conviction subcommittee, and that group has been evaluating national standards and best practices in other states. The goal is to find which public defense systems enable clients to receive the most effective representation, he said in the story.
Professor Schumm, a manga cum laude graduate of IU McKinney, is a clinical professor of law. He also directs the IU McKinney Appellate Clinic, and the Judicial Externship Program.
