IU McKinney IP Students Present at IUPUI University Library on 3D Printing
03/13/2018
Three IU McKinney students collaborated on a project for the IUPUI University Library on 3D printers and intellectual property issues. Michael Daniells and Nicole Dobias, both 2Ls, and 3L Robert Weyreter, presented their findings to the University Library Committee on January 29. The trio learned of the project from Professor Xuan-Thao Nguyen. She is the Director of the Center for Intellectual Property Law and Innovation at IU McKinney, and the Gerald L. Bepko Chair in Law.
IUPUI University Library plans to purchase an industrial-sized 3D printer, and needed research into the intellectual property issues that could arise from that and how to prevent them.
Daniells worked at Hotel Tango Artisan Distillery in Fountain Square before enrolling at IU McKinney, where he filled a variety of roles, everything from managing social media accounts to working with the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau getting labels and new beverage formulas approved. His interest in IP law, which he plans to pursue after completing his legal education, stems from this experience. Before that, he studied at the School of Informatics where he graduated with a degree in Media Arts and Science.
Prior to entering law school, Dobias worked for two years as a software developer, after graduating from DePauw University with a bachelor's degree in communication and a minor in computer science. Professor Nguyen approached her about being part of the project based upon her background in the industry. After completing law school, Dobias plans to pursue a practice in IP law as it relates to software.
Weyreter worked in Washington, D.C., as an aide for a member of Congress after graduating from Miami University with a bachelor's degree in supply chain and operations management. He will be an associate at the Zionsville law firm Schuckit & Associates after completing his legal education.
