Marya Rose, '90, Delivers Commencement Address for IU McKinney Graduates

Marya Rose, '90, chief administrative officer at Cummins, Inc., presented the commencement address to around 300 IU McKinney students who graduated during ceremonies on May 12. Commencement took place at the Indiana Convention Center.
As part of the senior leadership team at Cummins, Rose is responsible for nine global functions including legal, communications, marketing, government relations, compliance, facilities, security, corporate responsibility, and the company's global shared services organization. She often serves as the public voice for the company on critical issues. Rose was named CAO in 2011, after serving as General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for 10 years. In her tenure as General Counsel, Rose transformed the legal function from a U.S. organization to a global one with lawyers in China, India, Brazil, Mexico, Europe, Australia and Africa. Prior to joining Cummins over 20 years ago, Rose served two Indiana Governors, and practiced law in Indianapolis. She serves in leadership positions on a number of not-for-profit boards including Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky; the Indianapolis Museum of Art (now Newfields); Hoosier Women Forward; and 16 Tech.
During the event, Ashley Hart, '18, was awarded the Faculty Prize. The prize is funded by contributions from the law school’s faculty members who select a graduating student to receive the award on the basis of scholarship, service, and demonstrated capacity for leadership. IU McKinney students selected speakers to represent the various graduating classes during the commencement ceremony. The full-time J.D. division speaker was Sierra Murray. The part-time J.D. division speaker was Mike Cunningham. The Master of Laws speaker was Aron Hagos Okubaldet. The Master of Jurisprudence speaker was Heather Hurst.
Students also selected the following professors for the graduation hooding ceremony:
- J.D. hooding professors were Professor Frank Sullivan, Professor Lahny Silva, Professor Michael Pitts, and Professor Yvonne Dutton.
- LL.M. hooding professors were Professor Frank Sullivan and Professor Frank Emmert
- M.J. hooding professor was Professor Deborah McGregor.
