It's Time to Act, IU McKinney Grand Challenges Team Advises in Op-Ed
06/11/2018

IU McKinney School of Law faculty working on the Indiana University Responding to the Addictions Crisis Grand Challenge initiative outlined steps to improve the current opioid crisis and move toward a healthier, more resilient future in an op-ed published June 8 by Inside Indiana Business.
The op-ed, “On Opioids, We Found a Consensus among Hoosier Experts: It’s Time to Act,” by Professors Nicolas Terry, Ross Silverman and Aila Hoss, details some key findings from the team’s research.
“Following conversations with public health officials, researchers, criminal justice professionals, healthcare providers, and policymakers who deal with the crisis on a practical, day-to-day basis, we learned more about the crisis than even the most dramatic news stories could communicate. This crisis stresses our institutions to an unparalleled extent; hardworking public health departments, emergency rooms, treatment facilities, child services, community agencies, law enforcement, jails, and prisons frequently are overwhelmed,” the authors stated.
“An effective response will require evidence-based and -informed solutions, along with unprecedented collaborations at the local, state, and national level, but it can be done, and there are things we can do – starting now – to help.”
The IU McKinney research project is part of IU's $50 million commitment to prevent, reduce and treat addictions in Indiana. The team’s recently-released preliminary report details findings from a qualitative study involving key stakeholders, together with original evidence-based research designed to reduce barriers to effective harm reduction and treatment interventions to the opioids crisis.
The team’s research findings and proposed solutions have been covered widely in the media and discussed with state and national officials in Indiana and Washington, D.C.
