Maurice Scott, '12, Leads Student Group to First Place in Debate Competition
07/20/2018
Maurice Scott, '12, Assistant Corporation Council for the City of Indianapolis, led a group of middle school students to first place in a nation-wide debate competition. A story about his work appeared on the Indiana Lawyer website July 20.
Scott worked with students at the Global Prep Academy, getting involved when he learned from his wife that the students had questions regarding current government issues.
“I kept hearing how students were personally affected by the Muslim travel ban, potholes, food desserts and deportation of a loved one,” Scott said in the story. “I was amazed that students at such a young age had questions, paid attention to their community, and wanted to know what steps to take to resolve issues.”
The students placed first in the competition, which took place in Nashville, Tennessee, on July 19. Scott plans to gather more students and teachers for next year's competition, and involve other schools and collaborate with the Marion County Bar Association.
