Professor Schumm Talks about Social Media Posts in Criminal Cases for 'Indianapolis Star'
08/14/2018
Smartphones are being used more often in criminal cases, as internet search history, social media posts, and location data can all provide clues for law enforcement. Professor Joel Schumm, '98, discussed the use of social media posts in such cases for a story published in the Indianapolis Star on August 13.
Social media posts can be utilized in criminal and civil cases provided attorneys can prove the items are authentic, Professor Schumm said in the story. Facebook, he pointed out, is mentioned more than 250 times in Indiana appellate court opinions.
Professor Schumm, a magna cum laude graduate of IU McKinney, is a clinical professor of law. He also directs the IU McKinney Appellate Clinic, and the Judicial Externship Program.
