McKinney Law Visiting Professor Receives Recognition in Brazil

IU McKinney Law Visiting Professor Stella Emery Santana was recently presented an award from the Brazilian Academy of Science, Arts, History and Literature (ABRASCI).
The award, “Veritas et Justitia Prof. Dr. Heraclito Fontoura Sobral Pinto,” is given to distinguished Brazilian citizens who have been working in an extraordinary manner to the social-cultural, scientific, artistic and historical development of Brazil.
Professor Santana could not attend the ceremony on August 23 in Brazil, but her aunt, Francisca Etarcinha de Oliveira Emery, received the award on her behalf.
Professor Santana earned her J.D. in 2000 at Faculdade de Direito de Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, and received a master’s degree in International Analysis at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. She then received a master’s degree in law and economics from Universidade Gama Filho - Rio de Janeiro, where she wrote her thesis on the World Trade Organization and agriculture measures to promote a sustainable development in developing countries. Professor Santana completed a winter course in European Union Law in 2003 from Universidad Carlos III in Madrid, Spain, and received a Ph.D. in environmental geography at Federal University of Espírito Santo. Her dissertation was on integrated river basin and coastal zone ecosystem management and governance.
A private consultant for international and environmental law issues, Professor Santana has been teaching these subjects since 2002. She has been teaching at FAESA-Centro Universitario since 2006, and has been the director of the international program that sends students from FAESA-Centro Universitario to IU McKinney since 2009.
In addition, Professor Santana has been the chairperson for the Espírito Santo state bar environmental commission for two terms, and was a volunteer in this commission until June 2017. In 2016, she worked with the president of the Espírito Santo Environmental Agency as the environmental and administrative law consultant for the Samarco mining dam breakout that occurred in November 2015.
