Professor Watson Discusses Use of Grand Juries for Story in 'South Bend Tribune'
09/11/2018
Professor Fran Watson, '80, talked about the use of grand juries for a news story on their use by prosecutors. The piece was published September 9 in the South Bend Tribune.
Some people question the use of grand juries in situations involving police officers, including the recent death of a young woman in South Bend who died in a car crash with a police officer.
“When a prosecutor presents a case to a grand jury, it’s one-sided,” Professor Watson said in the story. “There’s no way to know, given that secrecy, how the facts came out.”
Professor Watson is the founding director of the Wrongful Conviction Clinic at IU McKinney. She is a clinical professor of law and teaches in the Criminal Defense Clinic and the Wrongful Conviction Clinic.
