IU McKinney Law Professor Discusses Climate Policy in IBJ Op-Ed, New York Times
09/20/2018
IU McKinney School of Law Professor of Practice Janet G. McCabe contributed an editorial to The Indianapolis Business Journal and was recently quoted in a page 1 story in The New York Times.
The commentary, “Rolling Back Clean-Car Standards is Misguided,” was published on September 14 and analyzes the impact of the Trump administration’s much-anticipated proposal to undo America’s clean-car standards.
“If it is finalized, impacts for Indiana will include more money spent at the gas pump; fewer choices of efficient, clean vehicles; fewer jobs in auto manufacturing; more air pollution; and a less-competitive American auto industry,” Professor McCabe predicts.
National and local media frequently call on Professor McCabe, a former Obama administration EPA official, to comment on changes to U.S. environmental policy and climate change. She was also recently quoted in a front-page story in The New York Times on another environmental rule change.
The Trump administration took its third major step this year to roll back federal efforts to fight climate change, making it significantly easier for energy companies to release methane into the atmosphere, according to the September 11 story.
The new rules follow two regulatory rollbacks this year that, taken together, represent the foundation of the United States’ effort to rein in global warming, the story said. In July, the E.P.A. proposed weakening a rule on carbon dioxide pollution from vehicle tailpipes. And in August, the agency proposed replacing the rule on carbon dioxide pollution from coal-fired power plants with a weaker one that would allow far more global-warming emissions to flow unchecked from the nation’s smokestacks.
“They’re taking them down, one by one,” McCabe said.
Professor McCabe was Acting Assistant Administrator for the Office of Air and Radiation at the EPA from 2013-17. She was nominated by President Barack Obama to be Assistant Administrator of that office. Professor McCabe is Assistant Director for Policy and Implementation at IU’s Environmental Resilience Institute. She is also a Senior Law Fellow with the Environmental Law and Policy Center.
