Jonathan Bashi Rudahindwa, LL.M. '11, Publishes Book

Jonathan Bashi Rudahindwa, LL.M., ’11, published the book, Regional Developmentalism through International Law, with Routledge. The book examines how law can be used to address issues spurred by regional processes involving the African Economic Community, which is tasked to coordinate and harmonize policies among various Regional Economic Communities in the continent. In the book, he recommends ways law can be used in strengthening Africa’s Regional Economic Communities.
Bashi is currently working on a research fellowship with the Centre for Comparative Law at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. He serves as an SOAS School of Law Post-Doctoral Research Associate, and works as a lecturer at the Université Protestante au Congo in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Bashi earned his Ph.D. in Law and International Development from SOAS University of London in 2016. He completed his Master of Laws in International and Comparative Law at McKinney. His capstone thesis was titled “International Commercial Arbitration in Africa: The Organization for Harmonization of Business Law in Africa (OHADA) Sets the Tone.” Professor Frank Emmert served as Bashi’s thesis advisor.
Bashi also served as a two-time international human rights law intern of McKinney’s Overseas Summer International Human Rights Law Internship Program at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. First, he interned with the U.N. Department of Peacekeeping Operations-Office of Rule of Law and Security Institution-Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Section, followed by an internship with the U.N. Department of Peacekeeping Operations-Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions-Criminal Law and Judicial Advisory Service. Professor George Edwards, founding director of McKinney’s Program in International Human Rights Law, served as Bashi’s internship supervisor.
