IU McKinney Takes Part in Habitat for Humanity Project
11/28/2018
IU McKinney students took part in building a home for an Indianapolis family as part of IUPUI's 50th Anniversary celebration. Greater Indianapolis Habitat for Humanity built a home for a family in Haughville, a neighborhood adjacent to the IUPUI campus.
Eric Hewlett, president of the Black Law Students Association, was the liaison for the law school's involvement in the Habitat for Humanity build on November 8. He was joined by eight of his classmates. In the photo from left are Lauren Ingram, Thakena Hogue, Eric Hewlett, Andrew Verhonik, Breanna Robinson, and Richard Okello.
"When this opportunity was bestowed upon me, I took it with no reservation," Hewlett said. "There are many families that need our help, and we should always want to do something to help solve the problem, especially if we have the resources to do so. Building a house for this family was one of the most gratifying things I did in my life. It enabled me to provide a family with the basic human need -- a roof over their head and a place to call home."
Their workload was not light on the day the law students volunteered. They finished putting up walls inside the home, installed windows, painted wood trim to go around the house, and painted the structure.
