Professor McCabe Comments on Move to Rollback Coal Emission Standards
12/07/2018
IU McKinney Professor Janet McCabe released a statement regarding the move by the Environmental Protection Agency to roll back emission standards for new coal and natural gas-fired power plants. Her comments were included in stories about the move that appeared in the Washington Post and the Associated Press.
Calling the move not unexpected, Professor McCabe said "this proposal further demonstrates how EPA is willfully turning its back on its responsibility to protect human health. The government's own analysis suggests that a rollback of standards with existing coal plants will lead to thousands of premature deaths and tens of thousands of new cases of respiratory problems."
Professor McCabe is Assistant Director for Policy and Implementation at IU’s Environmental Resilience Institute. She is also a Senior Law Fellow with the Environmental Law and Policy Center. She previously served at the EPA as the Acting Assistant Administrator for the Office of Air and Radiation from 2013 to 2017, and was nominated by President Barack Obama to be Assistant Administrator of that office. She joined EPA in November 2009, serving as the Principal Deputy to the Assistant Administrator of OAR.
