Maitha Altamimi Studying at IU McKinney on Fulbright Fellowship
01/11/2019
Maitha Altamimi is the most recent Fulbright Fellow to study at IU McKinney. She is a Master of Laws student, studying the International Human Rights Law track.
From the United Arab Emirates, Altamimi received her law degree from United Arab Emirates University, and then worked as a legal researcher for the Ministry of Climate Change for two years. While working at the ministry, she decided to pursue a diploma in foreign policy, and studied for that at the Emirates Diplomatic Academy.
But it was while Altamimi was working as part of an exchange program for a refugee school in Egypt that she decided she wanted to pursue a career in human rights law.
"I want to make change," Altamimi said. "I want to serve the people." She aspires to work for a non-governmental organization that works with children, hopefully in the area of conflict resolution.
Committed to pursuing a Master of Laws degree in International Human Rights Law, the Fulbright Fellowship program recommended a couple of universities, Altamimi said, and she chose IU McKinney.
"It has been an exceptional, delightful journey," she said.
One might think that a person from such a warm climate as found in the United Arab Emirates would not care for winter in Indiana, but for Altamimi, that is not the case.
"I come from a very hot country, and I wanted to experience a cold climate," she said. "It's really cold, and I like it!"
