Professor Katz Cited in U.S. News Story on Medical Treatment for Inmates
02/06/2019
A story in U.S. News & World Report about inmates' access to treatment for hepatitis C contains comments from IU McKinney Professor Robert Katz. The concept that inmates are the only people with a constitutional right to healthcare has its basis in law, Professor Katz said in the piece.
Professor Katz is one of the attorneys for Indiana inmates with hepatitis C who won a decision from the United States District Court, ruling that the Indiana Department of Corrections must provide inmates who have hepatitis C with treatment.
"Everyone should have a right to health care," Professor Katz said in the U.S. News story. "Inmates present a special case, however, because when the state incarcerates people, it prevents them from obtaining for themselves the things they need to live, including food and health care."
Professor Katz is an expert on law and religion and the law of nonprofit organizaitons. He teaches First Amendment, law and religion, nonprofit and philanthropy law, and the law of healthcare organizations
