Health Law Student Madison Hartman Wins ABA Writing Competition
02/14/2019
IU McKinney third-year law student Madison Hartman won first place for the American Bar Association’s Health Law Section Law Student Writing Competition.
Hartman wrote a paper, “Employment-Based Policy Solutions for Female Victims of Intimate Partner Violence,” as part of Visiting Professor Aila Hoss’s health policy class during the fall semester. Her paper will be published in the bi-monthly Health Lawyer magazine, and the ABA will fund her travel to the Emerging Issues in Healthcare Conference in March. The award also includes a $500 prize.
Domestic violence is a topic of interest for Hartman, who hopes to pursue opportunities in health law policy when she graduates in May. Her paper explores how policy solutions could be pursued as a strategy to help victims of domestic violence protect their employment status and examines what individual states have done in terms of offering protections.
“California has a good law, but so few states—including Indiana—do,” she said.
Hartman has been working on the paper for more than a year, but her externship at the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention over the summer of 2018 gave her additional tools and experience. She was encouraged to write and revise by Professor Hoss, who helped edit the paper that won the prize.
