Professor Santana to Present Research at University of Bergen
02/27/2019
Visiting Professor Stella Emery Santana will travel to the University of Bergen Faculty of Law in Bergen, Norway, in March to discuss her recent research.
"Is Brazil heading towards River Basin and Integrated Coastal Zone Management?" will be her topic on March 13 at the Centre for Climate and Energy Transformation at the University of Bergen. The main goal of this presentation is to explain the path to land/ocean zoning in Brazil as a tool of spatial planning in an integrated river basin and coastal zone management plan.
On March 15, Professor Santana will take part in a half-day seminar organized by Ocean Sustainability Bergen and the Research group for Natural Resource Law, Environmental Law and Development Law. She will discuss "Environmental protection on the High-Seas (the common heritage of mankind) and economic activities in the area -- past, present and future." During this lecture, she will discuss the 1987 Montego Bay Convention, which established the international legal framework for the law of the seas, and why the model for the benefits from the exploitation of resources there has not been put into place.
Professor Santana has been a visiting professor at IU McKinney since 2017, teaching a seminar in Environmental Law and Policy, and a course in International Environmental Law. She has been doing research on Ocean Law and Water Law while at the law school. She will return to her teaching at her home university, FAESA, in Vitoria, Brazil, in Summer 2019.
