Autonomous University of Barcelona Joins Chinese Law Summer Program

IU McKinney's Chinese Law Summer Program (CLSP) has gained a new affiliate law school: Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB).
This brings the number of law schools affiliated with the CLSP to five. The others are Boston College Law School, University of Oklahoma College of Law, University of Tennessee College of Law, and the University of Bergen Faculty of Law in Bergen, Norway.
"The addition of UAB to the Chinese Law Summer Program is an exciting development for our law school and for our students. The subject of our study is the Chinese legal system, which is a civil law system," said Professor Tom Wilson, Director of the Chinese Law Summer Program. "Students from the U.S. law schools come from a common law system. Students from Norway come from a mixed legal system not formally a part of the European Union. Students from UAB will represent a civil law system of a country within the EU. This diversity of legal perspectives provides an excellent learning opportunity for all students who participate in the Program."
UAB's participation will be directed by Professor José Maria de Dios, who teaches private international law at UAB Faculty of Law. He served as dean there from 2008 to 2013, and served as president of the European Law Faculties Association in 2017.
The CLSP is in its 31st year, hosted for the past 21 years by Renmin University of China Law School in Beijing. Since the program's inception, participants have come from over 100 American law schools. Students learn about the legal aspects of China's socialist market economy, and the development of the rule of law. Classes meet in the mornings, which leaves afternoons and weekends free for study or exploring. In addition to classroom instruction, students visit several government office and agencies, such as the Supreme People's Court, the Ministry of Commerce, and a major Chinese law firm. Students also visit major cultural attractions around Beijing, such as the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Summer Palace, and the Great Wall.
