International Student Speaker Series Considers Women's Empowerment

Maitha Altamimi and Adeola Abatan, Master of Laws students at IU McKinney, discussed women's empowerment efforts in their home countries as part of the International Student Speaker Series. The event, titled "Women's Empowerment in Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) -- Combatting Misconceptions, Challenges, and Issues -- National, African, and Middle Eastern Perspectives," took place on March 28 in the Faculty Lounge at Inlow Hall, and commemorated Women's History Month.
Abatan spoke about "Advancement in Women's Human Rights in Nigeria -- A Regional Perspective." She received her Barrister at Law degree from Nigerian Law School, and her Bachelor of Laws degree (hons) from Babcock University. Abatan was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2012, and practiced commercial and administrative law before beginning her LL.M. studies at IU McKinney.
Altamimi's topic was "Women in United Arab Emirates: Achievements, Challenges, and the Way Forward." She received her law degree from United Arab Emirates University, and a post-graduate diploma in UAE Diplomacy and International Relations from Emirates Diplomatic Academy. Altamimi worked for two years in the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and the Ministry of State before pursuing her LL.M. studies.
