Nearly 400 People Served during Annual Re-Entry Fair
04/10/2019
Nearly 400 people went to Eastern Star Church on the Indianapolis east side during the annual Re-Entry Job and Resource Fair, which took place on April 5. Students, alumni, faculty, and staff from the IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law were on hand to make sure everyone who came looking for assistance found the help they needed.
The event is the work of two student groups at IU McKinney: the Second Chance Re-Entry Assistance Program, and the Black Law Students Association. The fair, which is geared toward helping the formerly incarcerated find the services they need to re-established themselves in the community, was the topic of a news story by Indianapolis television station Fox 59. Among the services offered were resume reviews, expungement information and advice, driver's license information, child support, help with food assistance, health insurance applications, and voter registration. Students chosen to help with brief service and advice components during the day were required to undergo training, and worked alongside a practicing attorney during the event.
A total of 238 students and alumni volunteered during the event, and provided help to people looking for resources. Professor Silva and Professor Carrie Hagan are the principal organizers of the fair.
