Women's Caucus Auction Raises Funds for Schools on Wheels
04/18/2019
Women's Caucus, a student group at IU McKinney, raised $14,200 during its 42nd annual auction for Schools on Wheels. The event took place on February 21 in the atrium at Inlow Hall.
The auction is a highly anticipated event in the law school's year. Guest auctioneers were Professor Yvonne Dutton, Vice Dean Mike Pitts, and Professor Carrie Hagan. In the photo at left with Professor Hagan (third from left) are Women's Caucus members Libby Whitaker, Grace Dillow, and Katherine Bender. Items on offer included meals and outings with IU McKinney professors and alumni, as well as the ever-popular home-baked pies. Professor Mary Harter Mitchell, who passed away in 2009, typically donated a home-baked pie for the silent auction every year.
Auction proceeds went to benefit Schools on Wheels. The organization provides after-school tutoring to over 5,500 homeless children in the Indianapolis Public Schools system. There was a 121 percent increase in the number of homeless youth in Indiana between 2006 and 2013. These children are nine times more likely to repeat a grade, and are four times more likely to drop out of school. With Schools on Wheels' volunteers' help, 98 percent of the homeless children who receive 30 or more tutoring sessions are promoted to the next grade level.
