Moving Forward with the New McKinney Law Fund
06/07/2019
Annual gifts support every aspect of the IU McKinney experience, providing opportunities for students who will be the next generation of lawyers and leaders.
These annual gifts are unrestricted, meaning they can be spent as they come in, making an immediate difference in the lives of our students and faculty. Previously, annual giving dollars were part of what was known as the Dean’s Discretionary Fund. Recently, we renamed the fund the McKinney Law Fund, to more accurately reflect the importance and purpose of spending made possible by the generosity of our annual donors.
State funding and tuition only cover a small portion of the cost of operating a law school, according to IU McKinney Dean Andrew R. Klein, the Paul E. Beam Professor of Law.
“We are so grateful to our annual fund gifts, which create opportunities for learning that just would otherwise not exist,” Dean Klein said. “The McKinney Law Fund gives us the flexibility to take advantage of emerging opportunities and to respond to unanticipated needs and challenges, insuring that our law school remains a dynamic learning environment.”
Gifts to the McKinney Law Fund make a significant impact on scholarships, student programming, faculty retention, recruitment, career services and the legacy of our law school. Here are some of the recent emerging opportunities and unanticipated needs that the McKinney Law Fund supported:
- Educational travel for students. Generous annual giving allows students to travel to conferences and competitions. Courtney Einterz, a rising 3L, participated in the Saul Lefkowitz National Moot Court Competition in Chicago in February.
“Participating in this competition as well as the Intramural competition at McKinney in the fall helped me gain confidence in the courtroom and has given me countless connections in the legal community. It was a-once-in-a-lifetime experience and I am incredibly grateful for such a unique and enriching opportunity,” she said. - Fee remission for IU McKinney Law students. In addition to donor-funded scholarships, the law school awards merit-based fee remissions to entering first-year students each year, and all entering students are considered for these awards. Awarding fee-remissions keeps IU McKinney an affordable, competitive choice for law students who are considering their options, as well as making law school attainable for our next generation of attorneys.
- The Robert H. McKinney School of Law Summer Law and Leadership Academy (2018 event pictured) is a one-week experience designed to introduce undergraduate students from historically underrepresented backgrounds to law school and various careers that they may pursue with a law degree. This is the fourth year for the program, which has grown each year and will take place June 16-22, 2019.
