IU McKinney Graduate Program Student Externs with Indiana Supreme Court Justice
06/18/2019
Walaa Alkashgari, LL.M. ‘14, and an S.J.D. candidate at IU McKinney, has spent the last year working with Indiana Supreme Court Justice Steven H. David, '82. In addition to working as Justice David's teaching assistant in the Contract Law for LL.M. Students class that he teaches at IU McKinney as an adjunct professor, Alkashgari also had the opportunity to work as an extern with him at the high court.
Alkashgari was one of the first international students at IU McKinney to work as an extern in Justice David's chambers. As an extern, students have the opportunity to review appellate briefs and trial records, research areas of law that are new to them, attend meetings, and watch hearings.
“I am especially grateful to Justice David for the meaningful discussions of the cases under review I have been working on," Alkashgari said. "I have observed how friendly and humbly an Indiana Supreme Court Justice interacts with his staff and interns.”
“Externing is a challenge for anyone but for an international student, it is even harder," Justice David said. Alkashgari shared her ideas for the Immersion Program, which provides opportunities for IU McKinney's international students. The program is in its second year.
With her goal of one day working as a law professor herself, Alkashgari was a natural fit to work as a teaching assistant with Justice David in his Contract Law for LL.M. Students class. She has worked in this capacity in Fall 2017, and Fall 2018.
“These experiences have influenced the person I am today," Alkashgari said, "and provide a vision for my future as a professor of law.”
