07/10/2019
The Center for Intellectual Property Law and Innovation at IU McKinney has received an A- rating from preLaw Magazine. The ratings were announced in the publication's Spring 2019 issue.
The IP Center is directed by Professor Xuan-Thao Nguyen, the Gerald L. Bepko Chair in Law. “IU McKinney Law School is at the center of Intellectual Property creation, procurement and commercialization," Professor Nguyen said. "Our students enjoy IP externship opportunities at Eli Lilly and Company, Roche Diagnostic, Crane Naval Warfare Center , the Indiana University Research & Technology Corporation (IURTC), and Purdue Research Foundation Office of Technology Commercialization. Our location in downtown Indianapolis means our students hone their patent drafting skills at law firms while they are not in class. Our students expand their learning and networking opportunities at the IP Center. Inside the classroom, our full time and adjunct faculty members are here to train, inspire and shape our students to be leaders in Intellectual Property law. In other words, we are passionate about all things related to Intellectual Property.”
Professor Nguyen is an internationally recognized legal scholar, known for her expertise at the intersections of intellectual property, secured transactions, bankruptcy, licensing, and taxation. She was named a Fellow of the American College of Commercial Finance Lawyers in March 2017, and received the Grant Gilmore Award in honor of her scholarship from the American College of Commercial Finance Lawyers in April 2016. Professor Nguyen is the author of multiple books, the latest of which is The Intellectual Property Holding Company: Tax Use and Abuse from Victoria's Secret to Apple (Cambridge University Press 2017), co-authored with Professor Jeffrey A. Maine. Her law review articles have been cited by the Federal Circuit, the Third Circuit, the Ninth Circuit, as well as in the federal district courts, and state tax courts.
This is the first time the IP Center has received a grade from preLaw Magazine. It is part of the National Jurist family of publications. IU McKinney has received recognition for its top Criminal Law, Health Law, and Environmental Law programs from the publication.
Students in the J.D. program may receive the IP Graduate Certificate, and many graduate students focus on intellectual property law as they pursue the Master of Jurisprudence, Master of Laws, or Doctor of Juridical Science degrees. The IP Center offers many opportunities for students to meet and network with IP attorneys, learn about the latest issues in IP practice, take part in IP-focused moot court competitions, and get to know other like-minded law students in the Intellectual Property Students Association. Students interested in pursuing careers in IP also can take part in a variety externship opportunities offered through the Center.
