08/12/2019
Students will have the opportunity to investigate a number of ways to get and stay healthy during law school through the efforts of the Office of Student Affairs and its Wellness Week. The events will take place during the week of August 26.
Students may take advantage of the Alcohol Awareness program in the atrium on August 26 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Sponsored by the IUPUI Office of Health and Wellness Promotion, students can speak out against drunk driving with a photo pledge and adding their signature to those being collected on campus. Those who share their efforts on social media will snag some swag.
Experienced yogis and those new to the practice can take part in a yoga class on August 27 from 1 to 2 p.m. on the third floor of the Law Library, Room 355-2. No experience is necessary, and participants may enter a raffle to win a free yoga mat. This event is sponsored by IU McKinney's Yoga Club.
The Student Organization and Resource Fair will take place August 27 from 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. in the atrium. Students may learn about the more than 25 student organizations available at IU McKinney, as well as find out about services available from IU McKinney's Office of Professional Development, the IUPUI Office of Health and Wellness Promotion, the National Institute of Fitness and Sports, and the Indiana Judges and Lawyers Assistance Program, also known as JLAP. We hear the JLAP therapy dogs will be there.
The Indiana Blood Center must have donations from 550 individuals each day to ensure hospital patients' needs are met. Students may raise their sleeves and donate in the atrium on August 28 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The process takes less than an hour, and it's recommended that donors have a light snack before beginning. Most people are eligible to donate. There are very few causes for deferral and very few medications that are not acceptable. This event is sponsored by IU McKinney's Student Bar Association (SBA).
Students may learn how to prepare a healthy smoothie during a quick demonstration that will also feature samples on August 28 from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. in the atrium. This event is made available by Chartwells.
Professor Heidi Brown will be the keynote speaker during a lunch reception and discussion on August 29. She is the author of two books, Untangling Fear in Lawyering: A Four-Step Journey Toward Powerful Advocacy, and The Introverted Lawyer: A Seven-Step Journey Toward Authentically Empowered Advocacy, as well as a two-volume legal writing book series. Her talk is titled, "A Whole Law Student: Untangling Fears and Amplifying Your Authentic Voice." There will be a lunch reception from 12:45 to 1 p.m., when the discussion will begin. The event will take place in Room 300. This event is sponsored by IU McKinney's Office of Student Affairs. The first 10 students to RSVP and attend will receive a free copy of The Introverted Lawyer. Students may RSVP to Senior Associate Director for Student Affairs Wende' Ferguson at wefergus@iu.edu.
Talk a walk along the beautiful Indianapolis canal, which is a short walk from Inlow Hall! Meet other law students and representatives from the SBA in the atrium at 4:30 p.m. on August 29. The group will return by 5:15 p.m. in time for evening classes. All participants will receive some IU McKinney swag.
IUPUI Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) will offer a guided mindfulness medication on August 30 from 11 to 11:45 a.m. at CAPS offices, located at 719 Indiana Avenue in Walker Plaza, Suite 220. Students need to bring their Crimson Card to participate, but need not be a CAPS client in order to take part.
