Students Take Advantage of IP Externships at IU McKinney

Law students who aspire to a career working in intellectual property law have a variety of experiential learning opportunities open to them at IU McKinney. Here are some examples of students connected to the Center for Intellectual Property Law and Innovation, and their recent externship experiences.
Thomas Amick is a 3L who took part in a patent externship at Eli Lilly and Company during the Spring 2019 semester. During Summer 2019, he also worked as a law clerk at the Indiana University Innovation and Commercialization Office. "I would like to prosecute biotech patents with a local firm," Amick said. "I would aim to continue learning about patent law and over time develop a niche in the local IP community."
Katt Trott Boaz is a 3L, and has taken advantage of several sports law externships, including at the NCAA and Horizon League. She worked as a summer associate at Church Church Hittle + Antrim during Summer 2018, and is currently working as a legal intern at Henke Development Group. She aspires to work in some sort of sports capacity after completing her legal education. "I am fascinated by Olympic and college athletics, specifically with issues that arise in these atmospheres, including issues like image and likeness, payments and sponsorships," Boaz said.
Malissa Magiera is a 3L who is beginning a dual degree -- a masters in biology -- during the Fall 2019 semester. She anticipates graduating in May 2021. She took and passed the patent bar during Summer 2019. Magiera took the patent externship during Summer 2018, and the Indiana University Innovation and Commercialization Office during Spring 2019. She also externed at CMG Worldwide during Fall 2018, and currently works at Indiano Law Group, a small IP firm in Fishers.
Emily Whitsett is a 3L working as a clerk at Brannon Sowers & CraCraft, and works as an instrument technician at Eli Lilly and Company. She hopes to work at a small IP law firm in Indianapolis after completing her legal education.
