Justice David, '82, Professor Adams, '83, Teach at Vietnam National University

Indiana Supreme Court Justice Steven David, ’82, and Professor Cynthia Adams, ’83, traveled to Vietnam National University of Economics and Law in Ho Chi Minh City (UEL) in August to teach week-long courses at the 2019 UEL-McKinney American Center Summer School. Participating in the classes were law students and professors from UEL and surrounding Vietnamese universities as well as a significant number of participating students and faculty hailing from Japan, Taiwan, China, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
Professor Adams, a Clinical Professor of Law at IU McKinney, and the author of a leading casebook on teaching international students, taught an intensive course in U.S. Negotiations and Dispute Resolution. The course included various negotiation and mediation simulations and a challenging final simulation in which participants applied learned concepts in negotiations, mediation, and arbitration. “Teaching this course was a pure delight,” Professor Adams remarked. “The campus is beautiful, but the enrolled students and faculty were the highlight for me. They thoughtfully engaged with the materials, which resulted in robust in-class discussions and lively participation in the simulations. It was an incredible teaching experience, and I hope at least some of these exceptional students and faculty come to IU McKinney for our LL.M. program or for research.”
Justice David taught U.S. contract law. While in Ho Chi Minh City, Justice David also gave a presentation to the Ho Chi Minh Academy on "Checks and Balances of Power: Cases from the Indiana Supreme Court." He also had the good fortune to spend a few days in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, where he was able to visit with former students. Justice David teaches a course in contract law for LL.M. students at IU McKinney, and a course in evidence. "It was a remarkable experience to see McKinney graduates influencing and shaping tomorrow's Vietnam," Justice David said. IU McKinney has a cooperation agreement with VNU UEL that provides for opportunities for professors at both schools for travel and scholarship. Professors John Hill and Max Huffman traveled to UEL during Summer 2018 to teach as part of this agreement.
"These international partnerships allow us to extend the global reach and engagement of the McKinney School of Law," said Vice Dean Karen Bravo.
