Justice Brent Dickson, '68, Jan Aikman Dickson, Named "Couple for All Seasons"
10/03/2019
Former Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Brent Dickson, '68, and his wife, Jan Aikman Dickson, were honored as the "Couple for All Seasons" by the Saint Thomas More Society of Central Indiana. They were celebrated at a dinner that took place after the society's Red Mass on October 1.
The couple was introduced by Andrea Kochert Townsend, '13, who worked as a law clerk for then-Chief Justice Dickson. He was elevated to the Indiana Supreme Court in 1986, and became Chief Justice in 2014. He received the Civility Award from the Indiana State Bar Association's Litigation Section in 2015, and the Indianapolis Bar Association's Silver Gavel Award in 2014. Jan Dickson founded the Judicial Family Institute, a national organization dedicated to providing information and education on topics of concern and importance to judicial households and their family members. It became a nonprofit in 1993, and she served as the organization's president. She was inducted into the Warren E. Burger Society in recognition of this work.
Professor Frank Sullivan, Jr., a former colleague of Chief Justice Dickson, talked about his friends at the event. The two sat next to one another on the Indiana Supreme Court bench for 19 years.
"He was there when I arrived," Professor Sullivan said of Justice Dickson, "and he stayed after I left. One could not ask for a more collegial seatmate nor a more giving colleague."
The Couple for All Seasons award is given annually to those whose life and work exemplify the ideals of St. Thomas More.
