Professor Dutton Invited to Speak at Conference on Maastricht Treaty in the Netherlands
10/28/2019
Professor Yvonne Dutton was invited to speak at a symposium on the Maastricht Treaty in the Netherlands. Her presentation took place on October 25.
The symposium, "The European Arrest Warrant and in Absentia Convictions," took place in Maastricht, the home of the Maastricht Treaty, which founded the European Union. The symposium was organized by Professor Andre Klip of Maastricht University, and centered on the effect of European arrest warrants that resulted from in absentia trials.
Professor Dutton was asked to speak on the possibility of video trials as a way to avoid in absentia trials -- and thereby to help to avoid the problems of other states not recognizing the in absentia judgment and refusing to recognize that warrant. Her presentation, "The Virtual Courtroom: The Step Forward to Prevent In Absentia?" She outlined some of the benefits and criticisms of such a proposal, and discussed circumstances in which virtual courtrooms are being utilized in the United States and in international jurisdictions, among other considerations.

Professor Dutton is the author of Rules, Politics, and the International Criminal Court: Committing to the Court, published by Routledge Press in 2013. She is a Dean’s Fellow and a Grimes Fellow who teaches comparative law, international law, international criminal law, evidence, criminal law, and criminal procedure at IU McKinney. She was elected Midwest Vice Chair of the American Society of International Law in April 2017.
