IU McKinney 3L Malorie Palmer Named to Georgetown Law Fellowship Program
02/26/2020
Malorie Palmer, a dual-degree student at IU McKinney and the IU School of Social Work, has been chosen for the Georgetown University Law Center Women's Law & Public Policy Fellowship Program. The paid, year-long program places fellows with an organization doing work in women's rights, and also affords them the chance to network with some of the best and brightest in the field.
Professor Carrie Hagan encouraged Palmer to apply to the program, and both she and Professor Lahny Silva wrote letters of support for her.
Prior to law school, Palmer was on an entirely different career path. She began life as a book editor, having graduated from Ball State University with a bachelor's degree in English rhetoric. Once she began the work after completing her undergraduate education, she found it less fulfilling than she had hoped. Palmer then began considering other education options, and found the dual-degree program at IU McKinney and the IU School of Social Work.
"I ended up choosing the program specifically for its benefits in working with survivors of sex crimes, domestic violence, and human trafficking," Palmer said.
Palmer will spend her fellowship year working for AEquitas as an associate attorney advisor. The organization provides training and resources to prosecutors of sex crimes, domestic violence, and human trafficking nationally and internationally. It's work Palmer is familiar with, having worked the last two and a half years as an intern for the Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council in the same capacity.
"In future, I would love to keep doing exactly this work, as well as prosecute directly, and travel around the world to help educate others on these topics," Palmer said.
Palmer is on track to graduate from IU McKinney and the IU School of Social Work in May 2020.
