Professor Quigley, '87, to Present during Webinar on May 14
05/01/2020
Professor Fran Quigley, ’87, will discuss “Healthcare as a Moral Imperative: A Faith and Human Rights Perspective” during a webinar on May 14. The event begins at 12:30 p.m., and is hosted by the group, Justice Revival.
“Among economically advanced countries, the U.S. is the only one to closely tie our healthcare to employment and for-profit insurance,” Professor Quigley said. “It is no accident that we also pay the highest cost for care and have the worst access and outcomes. Even before the pandemic, Americans were struggling to get the medicines and treatment they need, and the barriers have only gotten larger in this time of job loss and economic strain.”
Professor Quigley teaches in the Health and Human Rights Clinic at IU McKinney, and he is a frequent writer and speaker on the topic of healthcare affordability, including access to prescription drugs. He and Jessie Wise, ’17, launched the Faith in Healthcare newsletter, aimed at spreading the word about the work that people from all religious traditions are doing as part of their desire to care for the sick. Professor Quigley is the author of Prescription for the People: An Activist's Guide to Making Medicine Affordable for All, published by Cornell University Press in 2017.
“In this webinar, we will be discussing how improving our healthcare system is not just required under human rights obligations, it is a moral imperative backed up by the collective wisdom of every faith and moral tradition,” Professor Quigley said. “And we will show how we can start meeting our moral and legal obligations in the U.S., quickly and with cost savings to taxpayers and patients both.”
