Professor Quigley's Work Regarding Nationalizing Vaccine Industry Cited by NBC News
05/08/2020
Nationalizing the vaccine industry could produce a vaccine for COVID-19 and do it quickly for very little money. It’s happened several times in U.S. history when the need for a vaccine arose during times of nationwide stress. An NBC News story on the subject quotes a paper on the topic by Professor Fran Quigley, ’87.
The news story refers to Professor Quigley’s research thusly: “a legal analysis shows that nationalizing the vaccine industry could be accomplished for next to nothing, given the industry’s substantial reliance on government funding and licensing." The quote is from the paper titled “Tell Me How It Ends: The Path to Nationalizing the U.S. Pharmaceutical Industry.” It will be published in the University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform later in 2020.
Professor Quigley teaches in the Health and Human Rights Clinic at IU McKinney. He is the author of Prescription for the People: An Activist's Guide to Making Medicine Affordable for All, published by Cornell University Press in 2017.
