Professor Edwards Named an Indiana Presidential Elector
07/02/2020
Professor George Edwards has been chosen to serve as a Presidential Elector from Indiana in the Electoral College 2020. He has created a website to share information about elector’s work and the college’s role in the process of electing a United States president.
Members of the Electoral College are the only individuals who actually cast a vote for president. Because of this, it is possible for a candidate to win the popular vote and still lose the election if they receive fewer electoral votes. This occurred in both the 2000 and 2016 elections.
IU McKinney has at least two additional recent connections to the Electoral College. Professor Frank Sullivan serves as a commissioner from Indiana on the Uniform Law Commission. The commission promulgated the Uniform Faithful Presidential Electors Act, which Indiana adopted. The commission filed an amicus brief in a U.S. Supreme Court case regarding faithless electors. Clarence Leatherbury, ’15, recently served as a Presidential Elector.
Professor Edwards is the Carl M. Gray Professor of Law, and the Founding Faculty Director of the Program in International Human Rights Law and the Guantanamo Bay Cuba Military Commission Monitoring Project. He has been elected as Delegate to two Presidential National Conventions, and attended two others, and has worked on political campaigns at all levels, from local to the Presidential, including working at primaries and caucuses around the U.S., primarily on legal matters related to voter protection.
