Professor Quigley Addresses Need to Reclaim Public Medicine in Latest Paper
08/21/2020
Professor Fran Quigley, ’87, is one of four co-authors of a paper that has been signed by dozens of public health organizations and experts, addressing the desire of many in public health to take the creation of vaccines into the public sector.
The piece, “Reclaim Public Medicine for Public Health,” was published on the website Common Dreams. “By taking the vaccine industry into public ownership, embracing open science, and creating public-sector capacity for a full-cycle pharma process, we can far better respond to this and future pandemics,” Professor Quigley said of the article. “Medicines were long considered a public good, off-limits to corporate profiteering, price-gouging, and monopolizing. It is time for us to reclaim them as such.”
Professor Quigley teaches in the Health and Human Rights Clinic at IU McKinney. He is the author of Prescription for the People: An Activist's Guide to Making Medicine Affordable for All, published by Cornell University Press in 2017.
