Professor Watson Explains Grand Jury Implications in Indianapolis Star Story
09/03/2020
A grand jury has been convened to examine the circumstances surrounding the death of Dreasjon Reed, who died May 6 after he was shot by an Indianapolis police officer. Professor Fran Watson, ’80, discussed the grand jury process in a story that appeared in the Indianapolis Star.
If the grand jury indicts the police officer, the matter will be heard in full public transparency, Professor Watson said in the story. “But if (there is) no indictment, then the public is left to wonder what facts were presented to the grand jury and what issues in dispute or matters of credibility might exist.”
Professor Watson is the founding director of the Wrongful Conviction Clinic at IU McKinney. She is a clinical professor of law and teaches in Law and Forensic Science, and Lawyering Practice, along with the Wrongful Conviction Clinic.
