Professor Watson Discusses Lag Time in Payments for Exonorees
09/10/2020
It’s been nearly a year, and Indiana’s new program created solely for the purpose of compensating those wrongfully convicted has yet to make any payments. Professor Fran Watson, ’80, of IU McKinney’s Wrongful Conviction Clinic, spoke with a reporter about the issue.
“It’s a continuation of something they’ve lived with for too long,” Professor Watson said a story that appeared in the South Bend Tribune. “This waiting for the lawyers, waiting for the courts.”
The program was designed to compensate each wrongfully convicted person $50,000 for each year the individual was in prison so long as they agree to not sue the state.
Professor Watson is the founding director of the Wrongful Conviction Clinic at IU McKinney. She is a clinical professor of law and teaches in Law and Forensic Science, and Lawyering Practice, along with the Wrongful Conviction Clinic.
