Fred Glass, '84, Joins Taft Law
11/04/2020
Fred Glass, ’84, Indiana University’s former athletic director, has joined Taft Stettinius & Hollister as a partner to resume his private practice, which will focus on general business law as well as issues involving sports/media/entertainment, higher education, employment, and government matters.
Glass was IU athletic director for 11 years, until he stepped down on July 1. During his tenure at IU, Glass led an effort to renovate and expand IU’s athletic facilities, without any use of tuition contributions, student fees, or taxpayer money. He also launched an unprecedented commitment to the welfare of student-athletes. He instituted a first-of-its-kind Student-Athlete Bill of Rights and established intercollegiate athletics’ most comprehensive sexual violence disqualification policy.
Prior to his tenure at IU, Glass played a central role in several sports-related initiatives in Indianapolis through his service on the Marion County Capital Improvements Board, including negotiating the 30-year agreement to keep the Colts in Indianapolis, developing Lucas Oil Stadium, expanding the Indiana Convention Center, and helping to negotiate the arrangement to regularly host the Final Four and other major events. Glass served as Gov. Evan Bayh’s chief of staff and chaired Mayor Bart Peterson’s transition team. He served as a law clerk for U.S. Federal District Court Judge S. Hugh Dillin after his graduation from law school.
Glass has received many accolades for his community engagement, including the Distinguished Alumni Award from IU McKinney. In addition to his J.D. degree, Glass earned a bachelor’s degree from IU.
