11/09/2020
COVID-19 pandemic and other pervasive barriers to economic opportunity have had a devastating impact on members of the Black and Brown communities in Indianapolis, as well as on other marginalized people. Dean Karen Bravo leads the Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee’s Race and the Legal Process Working Group to address this need. The group created the Pro Bono Surge Team to provide immediate help to these most vulnerable members of the Indianapolis community. She discussed the program and the need for it with Indianapolis television news station WISH.
“We are in such a time of uncertainty with the pandemic and the effects, all the studies show that those who are most socioeconomicly vulnerable are also those who are suffering most the consequences of the virus,” Dean Bravo said in the story. “It is difficult to ask an individual who doesn’t have training to understand all of the ramifications of what they may face.:
The Indianapolis Legal Aid Society, Indiana Legal Services, and the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic are all collaborating with the surge team to get services to the people who need them most right now.
Dean Bravo was chosen to lead the working group in June. Attorneys who are interested in helping with the Pro Bono Surge Team may fill out this online form.
