Professor Nguyen Discusses IP Taxation Connected with Bob Dylan Catalog Sale with Wall Street Journal
12/18/2020
Bob Dylan’s songwriting catalog was purchased by Universal Music Publishing group. It’s the latest in a series of deals made in 2020 that benefit the songwriters and the companies which purchase the catalogs. Professor Xuan-Thao Nguyen talked with the Wall Street Journal for a story about the strategies buyers can use to minimize state and foreign taxes. (Subscription required.)
Professor Nguyen noted that buyers of such catalogs often set up holding companies in Delaware to avoid state taxes. Abroad, purchasers can use holding companies in Singapore or Luxembourg with similar results.
In connection with Dylan and IP taxation, Professor Nguyen’s law review article, “The History of Intellectual Property Taxation: Promoting Innovation and Other Intellectual Property Goals,” co-authored with Professor Jeffrey Maine, was utilized as a source in an article in Forbes.
