Jimmie McMillian, '06, Installed as President of Indianapolis Bar Association
01/12/2021
Jimmie McMillian, ’06, has been installed as the president of the Indianapolis Bar Association. A news item in Indiana Lawyer highlights his career, love of motorcycles, and what he is looking forward to in the coming year.
McMillian was a law clerk at a law firm while a student at IU McKinney. After completing his legal education, he worked as a law clerk for then-Indiana Supreme Court Justice Frank Sullivan and as a partner in the litigation department at Barnes & Thornburg. He now is Senior Corporate Counsel and Chief Diversity Officer for Penske Entertainment, which includes the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, NTT INDYCAR Series and IMS Productions.
Motorcycle riding is close to McMillian’s heart. He serves as president of 317 Ryders MC, one of the largest motorcycle clubs in the state. It’s a love he shares with Indiana State Bar Association president Michael Tolbert. The two plan to take part in a ride for a good cause in the legal community during 2021.
The return of IBA’s Bench Bar conference is also something McMillian is looking forward to, he said in the piece. It is hoped the event, which will be in a socially distant format, will take place in Louisville in June, and culminate in a Juneteenth commemoration with that city’s bar association.
McMillian was named to the 2018 list of Most Influential Black Lawyers by Savoy Magazine. He received the Maynard K. Hine Medal for service to the IUPUI campus in 2013. Among other honors, he has received the National Bar Association’s Presidential Award in 2007, his law firm’s Pro Bono Attorney of the Year award, and the Honorable Carr L. Darden Leadership Award. He was president of the law school’s alumni association in 2011-2012, and served as president of the Neal-Marshall Indiana University Alumni Association in 2013. While in law school, he served as a barrister of the Moot Court Team and was a member of the Trial Advocacy Team.
