Professor Watson Discusses Conviction Integrity Unit with Indiana Lawyer
12/28/2020
A client of the Wrongful Conviction Clinic was unable to win exoneration even after the witness recanted her testimony. Marion County’s new Conviction Integrity Unit could perhaps have helped this client. Professor Fran Watson, ’80, who directs the clinic at IU McKinney, talked with Indiana Lawyer for a story about the new initiative.
“If something comes along after you had your first petition for post-conviction relief, you may not have a right to go back to court,” Professor Watson said of the issues facing the wrongfully convicted. “With a conviction integrity unit, the prosecutor’s office can take a look outside a court proceeding and take action if it’s warranted.”
Professor Watson is the founding director of the Wrongful Conviction Clinic at IU McKinney. She is a clinical professor of law and teaches in Law and Forensic Science, and Lawyering Practice, along with the Wrongful Conviction Clinic.
