McKinney Health Law Students Prep for Compliance Competition
02/04/2021
Moot court competitors from the IU McKinney School of Law are preparing for the University of Maryland Health Law Regulatory & Compliance Competition, a virtual event that begins February 19.
The team includes 2L students Shelby Knop (left) and Madison Hernandez and 1L Kendra Perkins (pictured below, from left).
Knop was part of a team last semester that competed in the National Health Law Moot Court competition with 3L students Emily Burchfield and Ana Carolina Corey, coached by 3L Michael Lakes, which placed 16th out of 36 teams from law schools across the country.
The competition presented a timely topic: students were asked to show off their advocacy skills through briefing and presenting oral arguments related to a case in which a nursing home employee cited anxiety as a reason for non-compliance of her workplace mask mandate.
Because that competition was also virtual, the three McKinney teammates were together only in a virtual sense, each working from their own remote locations. In the end, they only lost the oral argument portion by a few points, Knop said.
Despite the unusual competition circumstances, Knop said moot court is always a good experience. “You’re working for yourself and how you can improve your advocacy skills, but it is also for your team,” she said. “I’m so proud to represent IU McKinney.”
