IU McKinney Takes Part in ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition

A team from IU McKinney made up of 2Ls Cassidy Segura Clouse, Stuart Settle, and Cecelia Shaulis competed in the regional rounds of the 2021 ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition February 25–27. The team was coached by Professor Jim Dimitri.
Though the team did not qualify for the national championship rounds, they won high praise from the judges for their confidence, poise, bench presence, and knowledge of the law and the record, Professor Dimitri said. The ABA NAAC is the largest moot court competition in the U.S. The regional rounds in which the IU McKinney team competed were hosted virtually for the first time in the competition’s history. The team competed in the Chicago virtual region.
Among the attorneys who volunteered to judge the team’s practice moots were Courtney Abshire, ’19; Colin Flora, ’11; Ron Gilbert, ’19; Mollie Golden, ’21; Jon Pactor, ’76; Kailey Ruggiero, ’19; Ryan Shouse, ’19; James Strickland, ’18; and Janet Wheeler, ‘20. Professor Joel Schumm, ’98; Professor Frank Sullivan; and Adjunct Professor Jon Warner also volunteered as practice-moot judges.
